Questions about how we roll?
You've come to the right place.
What is the team like?
CP Cycling is a club team. This means that we receive no funding from the school and the club is student run, unlike a fully supported varsity team like Fort Lewis. This gives us flexibility to support anyone. Whether you're new to the sport, one of our national champions, or anyone in between, our club is a quirky and inclusive place that's all about having a good time!
What kind of "Cycling" does CP Cycling do?
We do both mountain and road and we have everything from aggressive all-day rides to introductory skills rides. We also get active off our bikes via trail work, our famous post meeting activities, and social gatherings!
Can I join if I'm new to biking?
Absolutely! A large portion of the club just participates for fun and there are plenty of opportunities to improve your skills or just ride for fun!
I'm a highly dedicated racer. How much support will you give me?
While we don't have a team bus (send your complaints to our treasurer Max), the club will pay for your entry into collegiate races, as long as you race in our kit. We offer full travel and lodging scholarships for MTB and Road Nationals and organize camping/lodging for regular season races. Want a custom training plan? We've got a student coach as well!
What does a normal week look like?
We host up to ten rides per week, split between MTB and road. We have a rotating schedule that's posted at our meeting each Wednesday. The best part is that after completing CP's ride leader training, anyone can lead any kind of ride they want!
What do I need to do as in incoming Freshman?
After taking a good look around this website to see what we're about, go follow our Instagram! We'll post important info like how to order a kit (it will be before school starts!) and details on our club showcase. If you plan on racing, make sure to bring your camping gear and get a USA Cycling Collegiate Race License here.
How do I store my bikes on campus?
The secure campus bike lockers are hotly contested so make sure to check when they become available in the Summer and reserve them here. Alternatively, many of us have kept one (or four) of our bikes in our dorm room, though we can't officially recommend you do that.
What does the race season look like?
CP Cycling mainly competes under USA Cycling in the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference. MTB season is in the fall and spans several race weekends hosted by several universities across California. The MTB events are almost exclusively attended by college students, so vibes are high and pressure is low. Road season spans Winter and Spring quarters and the races are generally co-hosted with the California Bicycle Race series, ensuring large field sizes and plenty of competition. You can find the race schedule here!
What if I need a bike!?
We have loaner bikes and a team mechanic to work on them! If you want to try biking without investing your life savings, we're here for you. Reach out here or via our Instagram if you'd like to learn more. If you want to get your old klunker or questionable Craigslist find going, we're all about that too. Come to our weekly Bike Fix event and we'll get you set up, for free!
Do I need to bring a car?
No! All of our rides leave from SLO and the trails begin straight from campus. SLO is a very bikeable city and we carpool to each of the races so no need to drive anywhere to ride your bike.
